Strengthen your relationship with your little ones by establishing daily reading rituals

Life in the 21st century is incredibly busy and it is rare for parents to have the time to simply sit quietly with their child and read a book before bedtime. However, did you know that by reading with your child every night, you are actually strengthening the parent-child bond + encouraging an open dialogue between the two of you?

Below are some compelling reasons to have a nightly reading ritual with your child.

Improves emotional development

Children’s brains are still developing and this includes the emotional component of their brain. By reading to your child every day, you are sending them the message that they are important to you and worth spending time with. This can strengthen your relationship and help them to develop a healthy self-esteem.

Your child will feel comfortable discussing issues with you

Reading almost always results in questions from a child and this can lead to an enjoyable discussion between the parent and the child. When this happens, it sets the scene for the child feeling comfortable having conversations with you and they will be more likely to approach you with problems in the future.

Better language acquisition

Having a parent read to a toddler improves both their listening as well as language skills. In the long run, this can help them learn how to read much more easily and understand complex concepts at school.

Improves sleep quality

All children will, at some stage, experience problems sleeping. Research has shown that those children whose parents read to them on a nightly basis, experience fewer sleep issues than those whose parents neglect this nightly ritual. Reading with your child before bed helps to calm their minds and promotes a better night’s sleep.

Helps to develop compassion + empathy

When reading a story to your child, they will often relate well to one or more of the characters in the story. This feeling of relatedness often leads to feelings of compassion, kindness and empathy, which they will take with them into their daily lives.

So, as you can see, reading really does help to build a stronger parent-child relationship which, we can all agree, is one of the most important parts of life!

Let’s all start buildling a nightly reading ritual + strengthen the fantastic relationship we have with our kids!
